Senate Bill (SB) 2081, passed by the 87th ֱ Legislature, Regular Session, 2021, adds prekindergarten classes to the existing class size limit of 22 for kindergarten through grade 4.
The class size limit for prekindergarten applies beginning with the 2021-2022 school year.
School districts may request a Maximum Class Size Exception under the provisions of ֱ Education Code, §25.112, if any class for prekindergarten through grade 4 exceeds the allowable class size limit of 22 students per class (a 22:1 student-to-teacher ratio). An exemption expires at the end of the school year for which it is granted.
The waiver application is available on TEAL as of September 1, 2021.
